TIME FOR CHANGE

Welcome to Thompson Dunn's first email newsletter - a new beginning for a New Year. A huge thank you to all of you who responded to our "we want your creativity" call.

Your overwhelming response confirmed to me the time was right to launch a newsletter and it is a great way for us to start 2005.

Timing, I believe, is a big part of change. Ecclesiastes got there long before me with 'To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven'.

The 21st century leads us to believe that we alone can make things happen. Do we live in a vacuum or a dynamic environment that contains its own energies? Recent events in Asia send out a powerful and devastating message that nature has its own way of changing things with a massive impact on us and our environment. We need to recognise the 'whole', and realise that we are all connected.

I firmly believe we have to be more harmonious and better integrated within ourselves and with each other to succeed in reaching our corporate and individual goals. Our change needs greater clarity, insight and timing. Worldwide response to the Tsunani has made us recognise that we are capable of this.

'Creativity' is our next challenge - see details at the bottom of the newsletter. Be as visionary, innovative and outrageous as you feel like being! We value all your contributions but give particular encouragement and thanks to those of you whose first language is not English.

A CHANGE MANAGER'S DILEMMA
Is it really possible to manage change or is it just an illusion, or rather a utopia? Isn't it more likely - or even unavoidable - that change manages us? Isn't change a natural process - such as living/surviving or evolving - that nobody can voluntary control? This is where the ambiguity comes up. For the full article click here

EMPOWERMENT FROM WITHIN

The only thing constant in life is change. Night turns to day. Day turns to night. Spring turns to summer. Autumn turns to winter. Everything is ever moving, ever changing. Try as we might, we can't capture the moment. But we can live in the moment by being here now and focusing on the task at hand. For the full article click here

THE MYTH OF RESISTANCE

As a CEO and former change director I have experienced many aspects of corporate change in global organisations. My view is that resistance to something good does not exist. Only bad change causes resistance. In general terms therefore, any organisational change which causes resistance is based on bad logic. I suggest that the logical part of the brain changes instantly when the need for change is obvious and clear. People can adapt in an instant when the logic says 1 + 1 = 2. However, people are emotional and physical beings and when these aspects are taken into account, then every change needs to be translated into what it means physically, mentally and emotionally to that individual. THE WORLD..

The world we live in is getting faster, more complicated and technologically advanced by the day. We are bombarded by e-mails, faxes, texts, annoying mobile phone ring tunes, laptops, and I-books to mention a few, and then we are expected to do the tasks at work, that we are actually meant to complete. TOUR DE FRANCE..
Not sure if you have ever done one of those last minute .com type holidays but I have just had an experience of a lifetime that I want to share. Its about inspiration, perspiration and sheer guts.

I was feeling a little fat and out of shape due to the fact that I have not signed up for my annual pilgrimage to the start line of an Ironman triathlon race this year. My logic has been to focus on my weaknesses, that is swimming, biking and running, then come back early next year and to go for the big one again - Hawaii. For the full article click here

TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE...

Simply put, I understand Transformational change to be a change in the nature of an individual, organisation or social system, conscious or otherwise, which occurs in response to a change in it's environment. For the full article click here

BALANCE AND CHANGE

I propose that there is a fragile inter-dependence between work, relationships and our environment and that a change in any one area can significantly influence the other areas. Given the rapid pace of unpredictable change in the world today, it seems reasonable to expect either work or relationships or the immediate environment to be in a state of flux at any given time. However, if two areas are under threat simultaneously, then this could very easily provoke significant and probably unwelcome change in the third area unless corrective and proactive action is taken. ARE YOU A TRANSFORMER?

What is a common "changer" we use every day?
It is an electrical transformer that recharges the battery in your mobile phone, powers your laptop, television, refrigerator and many other devices. It changes voltage and current to supply each particular appliance. The bigger the voltage and current change the bigger the transformer. How do they react to change?
