Leadership Reflections I’ve spent most of my career working in service businesses and improving their performance. My experience tells me that inspiring teamwork, commitment, trust and passion is essential for success. Businesses cannot succeed without people who take pride and satisfaction in their work and who share a clear vision, values and standards. Leadership is about winning the hearts and minds of people to achieve a common objective. What makes a good leader is authenticity, because people deserve it and recognise when it’s not there. The future for United Utilities is exciting. There’s a lot of scope for improvement and great potential for growth. My biggest challenge is to change the culture of the company. I want our people to be more dynamic, more can-do and more customer-focused. This is the key to unlocking clear potential for United Utilities and it will ensure that we take full advantage of opportunities for growth. I believe that leadership makes the greatest difference when the organisation has a top team empowered to make their own decisions.
