The Crisis of Leadership

What is true leadership? I believe leadership is something we all have the capacity to exercise.

Crisis of LeadershipMany erudite texts claim that leadership is a characteristic that only few of us are born with and that it cannot be taught. My belief is that we are all born with the capability to lead but in the majority of cases our experiences in life block our access to it. We live in a hierarchical society whose systems are based on the construct that the few control the many. In our earliest educational experiences we are conditioned to accept a system which ranks and rates one person against another, there are tops of forms, sports captains, head pupils, the implicit rule is there can only be one leader and if you are not it then you are a follower.

Who is your leader and if it is not you who on earth can it be? I contend that it can in fact only be you and that at times you may choose to follow another but in that decision you are still exercising personal leadership. Personal leadership is about accepting responsibility for the choices you make and being aware that you have a choice. This recognition of responsibility and choicefulness is the key to true leadership in all its guises.

My contention is that now more than ever we all need to demonstrate personal leadership. In business things are changing so quickly that there is not time to wait until we are told what to do. In society we can no longer depend upon the authorities to address the disintegration of social order. On a global ecological scale we can no longer rely on governments to take the uncomfortable decision to prevent a catastrophe.

Now is the time for each individual to be the leader they were born to be.
