Leadership

Pat Thompson Hello and welcome to Thompson Dunn's fourth email newsletter.

Once again, I must start by thanking those of you who have taken the time to offer your thoughts on our topic of Leadership.  It has been a pleasure to read and publish your contributions.

Leadership is always a theme of great relevance and debate, keenly focused upon in both management theory and practice.  Leadership’s definition, its application and its impact, both organizationally and individually continue to be areas that require reflection, clarity and ongoing personal investment.  The diverse articles here underline the complexity of this subject and its fundamental importance to us all.

At Thompson Dunn we are committed to leadership development for our clients and it is the very passion that drives us.  We enjoy working with global leaders and at a local level and understand the difference when developing these two roles.  We encourage a sense of personal leadership in ourselves and in all the people with whom we work.  In doing so this enables our clients to take personal responsibility for their growth.

I encourage you to look at our updated website at www.thompsondunn.com and read how our approach and practices can foster effective leadership in your people.

I hope that you find inspiration and insight from this newsletter.  We certainly did in its creation.

Pat

The CEO and Talent Management
What do I spend most of my time doing?  Supporting CEOs and strategic HR professionals to build a global leadership pipeline.  How do I do this?  Mostly by emphasising the importance of Talent Management and Leadership Development and then facilitating it at many levels organisationally.

Why should Talent Management be a CEO priority?

Leadership – Is there a Universal Leadership Style?
Few managers, who expect to have a high profile career, can expect to stay in their home country, or even the same company for their entire career.

In a future where flexibility is a given, we may like to ask “is there a universal leadership style, that can help a manager to be successful in every company, wherever it is in the world?”

Leadership Reflections

I’ve spent most of my career working in service businesses and improving their performance.  My experience tells me that inspiring teamwork, commitment, trust and passion is essential for success.  Businesses cannot succeed without people who take pride and satisfaction in their work and who share a clear vision, values and standards.  Leadership is about winning the hearts and minds of people to achieve a common objective.  What makes a good leader is authenticity, because people deserve it and recognise when it’s not there.

Authentic Leadership – “Know thyself”
“Leaders need to be authentic to be truly effective”

You might have heard this from a leadership coach, read it in an HR initiative strategy report, or been told that it’s a “key competency” to be on the lookout for when you are recruiting.  Perhaps you’ve nodded sagely at the importance of ‘authenticity’ whilst wondering how on earth you are supposed to recognise it, find it or develop it in your people!

From my perspective as a business coach, authenticity in leadership is not merely important – it is the essential component that leaders must have to be effective long term.

The Difference between Leadership and Management

There are a wealth of theories regarding how to be a better leader and the benefits this can provide to your company. Equally, good management is often cited as the critical differentiator between companies, and the buck stops with the manager when things don’t go ‘according to plan.’ While most people can probably think of an example of a ‘good’ leader or manager they have worked with, or would like to work with, just what is it that typifies these individuals in the first place?

Psychology’s conception of Leadership and Management

Are leadership and management a series of traits that one must possess in order to be labelled “leader” or “manager”? Or are they purely situational?

Leading from the Edge

“Lead from the front” is attributed to Audie Murphy, America’s most decorated soldier & film-star. It has two meanings, both to lead by example and physically, to be in the front line and lead the troops as they advance.

While both of these are undeniably valuable attributes I’m going to argue here for the more subtle skill of ‘Leading from the Edge’; and likewise I’m going to give it two meanings: being on the edge of new thinking and holding the edges of the space in which people work.

The Crisis of Leadership

What is true leadership? I believe leadership is something we all have the capacity to exercise.

Many erudite texts claim that leadership is a characteristic that only few of us are born with and that it cannot be taught. My belief is that we are all born with the capability to lead but in the majority of cases our experiences in life block our access to it.
